Built in the 1970’s according to the low-rise, urbane ideals of Jane Jacobs, the West Village Houses were nonetheless often dark and somewhat cramped. This staged renovation of a duplex centers on a stairwell that I reconfigured to transmit light across the apartment, while offering a landscape of seating and display and a surprising amount of new storage below. The clients are both artists and retired elementary school teachers, and original residents. Margaret is a photographer and Mark is an actor, writer and puppeteer who collaborated with Kermit Love and manipulated the ears of the original Snuggles bear. And yes, those are Bil Baird puppets hanging out in the office. Featured in Tack Magazine, Floornature.com and Veils and Velocities.
